How To Achieve Your Long Term Goals

How To Achieve Your Long Term Goals

Recently I had the great pleasure of achieving some goals that have been on my list for many years. I am now a published author and a few weeks ago I launched my book at the Piccadilly branch of Waterstones in London, which was another dream come true.

If I were to answer the question of what does it take to achieve a long held dream then I would have to say: persistence. Persistence with a capital P !

I looked up persistence in the dictionary and the definition of the verb ‘to persist’ is: to continue steadfastly or obstinately, in spite of opposition or warning; to persevere; to last, to endure. In other words, when the going gets tough, the tough keep going!

Also implied in the meaning of persistence is that you have actually started to take action on your project. If you haven’t then what is one simple thing that you can do right now to get you on your way?

There have been many setbacks in my writing journey. I first started writing towards the end of 1999. A few months later I developed repetitive strain injury in my right wrist. This was definitely a handicap when my passion was writing and my day job was computer programming! I also spent many years writing various versions of a novel, each of which was rejected by the publishing industry. Even while I was writing the manuscript for Don’t Give Up Your Day Job I was suffering from a difficult bereavement as well as back pain. Although the book is now published I still have a few obstacles around the PR and marketing of it so the challenge goes on and I must keep persisting!

How do you persist when the challenges are big or the knock-backs too upsetting? I’m afraid that there is no magic answer to this other than to keep taking action. Doing your best to move forward is a great antidote to the pain of potential defeat. Pick yourself up, dust yourself down and think of useful things you can still do.

If you are frightened or scared to continue then think of something very very easy that you can do to get yourself back on the journey. Also think of ways to support or motivate yourself while you face difficulties. Self moddycollying is absolutely necessary to continue with a project when many others would give up.

It is also useful to have some like-minded people around you. Even if their project is different to yours, the fact that you are both striving to achieve your dreams will give you something in common and you can encourage each other when problems occur.

Remember that challenges make you stronger. They help to forge your capabilities so that you can develop the skills you need to carry out your dreams. As you overcome your obstacles then you can share your growth with others and help them too.

Sometimes it will feel like you are doing two steps forward and then one backwards but an arrow has to be pulled backwards in the bow in order to gain enough momentum to zoom forwards and hit the target.

Very few things of value happen without persistence. Leading the life you want to lead is about following your heart, shooting for your dreams, not accepting second best in your life and striving to make your life the best that it can be. The person who persists will win in the end.

    Hi Cali,

Today I went for long walk around a local lake where I live and listened to your talk about don’t give up your day job. I would just like to say what an inspiration you are. I have been one of Nick’s memebers since the beginning of this year and have completed one of his distant learning courses, which helped him me start Explore Your Journey. What really gave me great inspiration was when you mentioned your age and how long it took you and the words IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES AS LONG AS YOU START. I am not where I would like to be due to a few challenges. Even myself as a personal developement coach need coaching from time to time and just want to say how well you delivered the talk and gthe motivation it has given me. I have my 3 rule plan and it feels great. I look forward to getting stuck in and reading your book.

I am lucky to have the post above. I would like to recommend it to everyone.. Here is my comment – When that you are ready to commit to action and perform the necessary measures towards reaching your goals, you will discover that there’s nothing that will stand in your way. This is where a life coach will come in handy for you. A life coach acts as a partner in the course of your day; one that will help act like a mentor, a friend, as well as a motivator towards reaching each of your dreams. Life coaches are always there to help you see the positive aspects in everyday life. When something new comes your way that causes you to reconsider your route, it really is normal to seek out the drawbacks and concentrate on what you don’t like. But a life coach helps you realize that there are good things everywhere. You will be ready to keep and maintain a very good attitude that would allow you to continue seeing all of the abundance you’ve got in life.

  6. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  12. I am thinking about building a local news website that will, for the most part, be a collection of local news stories published by newspapers and other sources. Is it legal to do this? I would, of course, give all credit to the authors. I’m just wondering what the legality of this would be? Thanks for the help!.
